How to Prepare Your Property for Spring

After a long, dreary winter, we can finally look forward to the warm spring and summer months! One of the best places to enjoy the warm sun and fresh air is none other than your own backyard. Especially with all the fun outdoor features you’ve installed and beautiful landscape you’ve maintained. The colder temperatures can unfortunately take a toll on your backyard, which is exactly why it’s so important that you take some time to revamp it for the spring.

Keep reading to learn about how you can prepare your property for the spring in a few simple steps.

Lawn and Greenery

The moment you step outside you might notice that your lawn has taken the brunt of the winter weather. That’s to be expected, so don’t be too disappointed to find that your lawn has a couple bald spots.

We’ve outlined a detailed plan to help you bring your landscape back to a full bloom!

Lawn

Wait until your lawn is completely dry to begin your work, as working with wet soil can lead to further damage from pulling out roots. Start by raking your lawn to remove dead grass, leaves and other debris. If your lawn has any bald spots, remove the dead grass and fill with a combination of topsoil and grass seed. Keep the soil moist to ensure the new grass grows back green and fresh.

Aerate your entire lawn and over-seed to thicken your lawn. If it seems sparse, add a thin layer of topsoil and grass seed to ensure it grows back full and lush. Next, add fertilizer and water your grass. You will want to add about one inch of water to your lawn every week to ensure it stays healthy and happy.

Using a high-quality lawn mower, you should regularly maintain your lawn by cutting it to about three and a half inches. This will help keep the moisture locked in, so your grass doesn’t dry out or burn.

Garden

As for your garden, it’s a lot of cutting and trimming. Start by cutting your perennials down and trimming the bushes, then fertilize using a slow-release fertilizer. If you’re looking to add a unique burst of color to your garden, add some summer flowers like pansies or gladioli for an instant bloom while you wait for your perennials to come to life.

Spa Installation

If you own an in-ground swim spa or a hot tub, you might find that it’s one of the larger attractions of your backyard. Take some time to ensure that your installation is in tip-top shape by inspecting the area and checking for cracks or leaks.

If it’s been a couple months since you changed the water, take the time to do so. Completely drain the tank, clean all the components, interior and exterior of the spa, and then refill with clean water. Once the water is nearly full, you can begin to add cleaning agents.

Repair Winter Damage

The exterior of your home and backyard may have succumbed to damage over the winter season. Check the following to ensure no cracks, leaks or damage has occurred:

  • Gutters
  • Cracks
  • Calking
  • Air conditioning system
  • Outdoor faucets
  • Lights
  • Roof
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Deck/patio, walkways, and steps

Once you have ensured that your property is in good shape, this might be a good time to give it a deep cleaning. Take out your power washer and get to work! Your driveway, walkways, porch, and the siding of your house will most definitely thank you for it.

Accessories and Furniture

Now that your property has been maintained and is in full bloom, it’s time for the finishing touches. Bring out your seasonal furniture and backyard features to really take things to the next level. This includes tables, chairs, couches, porch swings, BBQ, candles, pillows, and everything else in between!

If anything looks old and dingy or could really be replaced, why not do it at the beginning of the warmer seasons? That way you can accessorize your backyard with what’s in style for the season!
